- Orb Weaver, Cycle/Place is a mask and mount set. The mask is handmade paper with acrylic paint, color pencil and press type on rice paper handmade by the artist with inclusions from the spider’s web and the garden. The face on the mount is cast paper, using a mold taken from one of my friends’ faces. The backing is heavy watercolor paper, spackled and painted to match the gallery walls at MAINSITE Contemporary Art. It is backed with foam core and supported by wooden stretcher bars. It floats 1.5 inches from the wall and measures 18 x 24 x 6 inches.
The Orb Weaver series began with the “rescue” of a tattered butterfly from an Orb Weaver spider’s web in my garden. I found the butterfly dead on my path the following morning, having completed its life’s cycle and feeding no one.
